Magickal Uses for Herbs, Roots, & Resins
Angelica Root(also known as Holy Ghost Root, Archangel Root, and Dong Quai)
This Root is thought to be a powerful guardian as well as a strong healer. Angelica root is especially good for women as it helps to increase female energy. Women should use this root to cultivate creative energy for new ideas and to aid in the first steps of building plans.
Alfalfa Leaf
This herb is mainly used to protect against poverty and hunger. There are several ways to use this herb for these purposes. One way to use this herb is to fill a small jar with alfalfa and then place in a kitchen cupboard or in the pantry. Another way is to burn the herb in a cauldron to use the ashes in amulets or to sprinkle the ashes around the parameter of the property. This herb can also be used in money spells to attract resources.
Asafoetida (also known as Devil's Dung and Food of the Gods)
This herb has a pungent odor and is very powerful in spell work. Use this herb for banishing, protection, exorcism, purification, and removing curses. I recommend using this herb in small amounts; use with care. Throw the herb into a fire or put into an incensory to rid unwanted entities during rituals.
Arabic Gum (from the Acacia tree)
This resin has many uses and sacred qualities. When used in incenses it binds together all of the ingredients and it helps to connect all parts of a spell. Burning alone on charcoal can promote a meditative state; the fragrance is light and smooth. This resin can be used for purification, increasing spirituality, developing psychic powers, anointing, altar offerings, and protection. It is particularly good to use in binding spells. Adding Arabic Gum resin to another resin such as Dragon's Blood or Frankincense strengthens the desired affect.
Since this resin comes from the Acacia tree, it contains all of the spiritual properties associated with this species. The Acacia tree has been used in several biblical stories such as the burning bush that spoke to Moses, the wood that Noah built his ark with, as well as the branches in the crown of thorns that Jesus wore. Burn this resin to honor and celebrate Jesus' resurrection. Many have also used this resin to aid in making contact with the spirits of the dead.
Bay Leaf (also known as Bay Laurel (Laurus nobilis, Lauraceae), True Laurel, Sweet Bay, Grecian Laurel, Laurel, or Bay Tree)
This herb is mainly used to increase psychic ability and promote wisdom. It can also be used for protection and purification as well as for strength.
To produce psychic visions crush bay leaves to use as an incense or mix with other psychic herbs. You could also place bay leaves around your cast circle and put whole leaves on your altar for protection and to increase psychic energies. If you want to experience having prophetic dreams, try making a sachet with bay leaves and putting it in your pillowcase. Make sure to have a journal handy for when you wake up to record whatever you remember from the dream.
Altar items, magickal tools, as well as yourself can be purified and protected by passing items or yourself through the smoke of burning bay leaves. A censer is handy for this.
Benzoin Gum
This resin is often used as a base for many incense blends. Burned alone, Benzoin Gum has a sweet vanilla like scent. Burn this resin for knowledge, peace, psychic protection, and to aid in astral projection. This resin can also be used for clearing energies.
Benzoin Gum, when wet becomes sticky, however, this process acts as a way to preserve scent, preventing the deterioration of essential oils in a blend.
Calamus Root (also known as Sweet Flag)
Use this root to strengthen and bind spells. This root can also be used for gaining control. Egyptians used this plant as an aphrodisiac.
Cardamom (Botanical Name: Elettaria Cardamomum)
This herb can be used in love, and lust spells- especially if you’d like to heat things up in the bedroom. Grind the seeds to a fine powder to make incense for a spell or add them whole to a sachet to attract love or lust. If you have butterflies in your stomach and want to talk to a possible lover try chewing on the seeds beforehand. Chewing on the seeds creates a stimulating effect that helps to calm nerves and clear the mind.
Cardamom can also be used for protection.
Copal
This resin can be burned for protection, purification of objects and people, consecration, to clear a ritual space, and to help send, or carry offerings to the God and Goddess.
Copal helps to bond ingredients in an incense mixture.
Damiana Leaf
This herb is used primarily in love and sexuality spells. Burn as an incense or carry in a charm or sachet.
“Throughout history, Mexican women have used Damiana in their tea as an aphrodisiac claiming that the effect helps them to become immersed in the act of sex.” Miller, Richard Alan. The Magical and Ritual Use of Aphrodisiacs. Rochester, Vt: Destiny Books, 1993. Digital.
Dragon's Blood (from the Draceana Draco tree)
This resin has many uses. Burn as an incense during spells for love, sexual potency, protection, strength, courage, determination, increased energy, making changes, and exorcism. If you add just a small amount of this resin to an incense mixture expect a powerful result from your desired intentions. Dragon’s Blood has an alluring fragrance that is strong yet soft at the same time.
Dragon’s Blood is also used to make a very powerful ink and for magickal seals. The ink can be used for several purposes such as writing spells (especially a protection spell for a book of shadows), wishes, charms, and to draw sigils for example.
Elderberries
Use this herb for exorcism, protection, healing, prosperity, and sleep based spells. The scent of this plant has been known to put people in a sedated state and can cause you to fall asleep. Grind dried berries to a fine powder and burn on a charcoal disk to release the plant’s energies. Put this herb in a sachet or charm to carry on you to protect against harm.
